Intelligence360 reports provide you with a hefty list of out of the box calculations and pre-calculated fields, but we know there are endless perspectives and calculations that can offer further insight into your data. Adding a custom math expression allows you to create a custom calculation in the platform that will remain available for your use in headlines and subtitles. Custom math expressions give you the power of platform calculations at your mathematical whim.
Creating a Custom Math Expression
-
Go to the Calculation section of a report editor
-
Click the + button and select Add Math Expression
-
Create a new math expression that you can type any math formula into, and use the results of other calculations in the formula. The capabilities of the expression are many, check out this article from mathjs.org for a laundry list of possible expressions. Be sure to select your desired outcome format in the "Format As" dropdown button to indicate the type of number you want the final calculation displayed as in your report.
To create a new expression you'll need to know what your desired outcome is and what calculation of existing data would create that outcome, but then let the machine do the work for you. Remember in high school when you said "When will I ever need this in real life?" The time has finally come.
-
You can then use the newly created calculation in headlines and subtitles like any other.
In the example above we've created a math expression that will calculate "Average Price Per Product" by dividing the Sum Opportunity Product Total Net Price Year One field by Count:
Sum Opp Product Total Net Price Year One / Count = Avg Price Per Product
👆 Average Price Per Product would then become an available expression in reports of the same content type.
This is a simple example of an incredibly robust capability that offers almost endless combinations and possibilities to best fit your needs. Beyond using current fields in these expressions, you can use custom expressions within custom expressions for a whole Russian nesting doll situation; meaning you can calculate a custom expression and use that expression as an item in yet another formula.
